What Is Digital Marketing?

Digital marketing is a form of marketing that promotes products and services through the use of the internet and digitally enabled devices such as desktop computers, mobile phones, and other digital media and platforms. Digital marketing is also called “Online Marketing”. A company’s digital marketing strategy may include using websites, search engines, blogs, social media, video, email, and other methods to reach customers.

Types of Digital Marketing

There are different types of digital marketing which are explained as follows:

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

SEO is a set of techniques used to improve the appearance and positioning of web pages organically in search engine result pages (SERP).  The ultimate purpose of SEO is to increase the number of visitors to a website by ranking it higher  in the SERPs (search engine results pages) of Google (or other search engines) for specific target keywords. SEO is of two types: On page and Off page SEO.

On-page SEO is a method of optimizing individual web pages in order to improve their search engine rankings and generate more relevant traffic. It focuses on improving aspects of your website that are within your control e.g. right title tag, content, images, html code, page load speed, mobile friendliness, navigation, intact links etc.

Off-page optimization is a technique that can be used to boost a website’s ranking on a search engine results page (SERPS). It focuses on increasing the authority of your domain e.g. Social media presence, social bookmarking, natural backlinks etc.

Pay Per Click (PPC)

Pay-per-click deals with Google’s sponsored search results and entails bidding on specific keywords that will bring you the most traffic. This is a short-term form of digital marketing, which means the ad will disappear once you stop paying. PPC, like SEO, is a strategy to boost a company’s internet search traffic.

Advertisements that appear at the top and sides of a page of search results, ads that appear when browsing the web, commercials that appear before YouTube videos, and ads that appear in mobile apps are all examples of pay-per-click advertising.

Social Media Marketing

The use of social media channels to engage with your audience and promote your brand is known as social media marketing. This includes creating compelling content for your social media profiles, listening to and connecting with your followers, analyzing your outcomes, and running social media ads. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, YouTube, and Snapchat are the most popular social media platforms right now. The number of monthly users of the most prominent social sites is shown below.

Social Networks Monthly Active Users
Facebook 2.895 billion
Instagram 1.393 billion
Tiktok 1 billion
Twitter 436 million
Linkedin 303 million
Pinterest 454 million
Snapchat 538 million
YouTube 2.291 billion
Quora 300 million

Content Marketing

Content marketing is another type of digital marketing. The process of creating valuable, relevant material in order to attract, acquire, and engage your audience is known as content marketing. Content includes blogs, resources like white papers and ebooks, digital video, podcasts, and much more. It’s vital to remember that content marketing is a never-ending process, therefore investing in a skilled content marketing team pays off. The ROI (Return On Investment) and business value that content marketing provides over time distinguishes it from other methods of marketing.

Email Marketing

Email marketing is the use of email to advertise a company’s products and services while also incentivizing client loyalty. Email marketing is a method of informing people on your email list about new products, promotions, and other services. It can also be a softer pitch to educate your audience about your brand’s worth or keep them engaged in between transactions. It could also be anything in between. Email marketing is a tried-and-true approach in and of itself: It was voted the most effective lead generator by 89 percent of professionals polled.

Mobile Marketing

This sort of digital marketing focuses on reaching out to your target audience through their smartphone or tablet. Text messages, social media, websites, email, and mobile applications are all examples of mobile marketing. Marketers can customize offers or special content based on a customer’s location or time, such as when they enter a store or attend an event.

Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is the process of earning a commission by promoting the products of another individual or firm. The affiliate simply finds a product they like, promotes it, and earns a portion of the profit from each sale they make. Affiliate links from one website to another are used to track sales.
