In one of our GG Online Class, the live webinar, we had Dr. Aditi R Khandelwal. She is an academician and founder of a plant boutique venture – FloraFrenzy. The session she took was all about the Corporate Etiquettes. The session will help you learn how to behave sensibly and appropriately at the workplace to create an everlasting impression. Speaker had divided the session in 4 parts

1. Everyday Mannerism

Mannerism is the key to carry with you every day. Everybody will observe and appreciate you if you’ve good mannerism. Mannerism means a habitual gesture or way of speaking or behaving. Every office has its own organizational culture. The way you dress up & carry yourself also shows your mannerism. In corporate office, always wear formal clothing and carry your I-card if you’ve. You should wear cloths in which you’re comfortable in wearing. Formal dressing gives you an edge and your attitude changes accordingly. It is important to have clean nails, polished formal shoes, clean & ironed cloths at office, trimmed hair or maintained beard as it’s all about mannerism. Greeting everybody with smile is the most important thing. Make sure your workstation/office desk shouldn’t be messy at all. Do not forget to say thank you, welcome, pulling a chair/opening or closing the door for somebody in the office as that also matters.

2. Specific Meetings

You should always appear good while meeting with clients. Girls can carry light makeup. When you meet people always greet everybody, do smile and shake hands with confidence. If you’re hosting the meeting, you should introduce the people first. Do not interrupt anyone in between. Let them finish and then add your valuable thoughts. Be polite in the meeting and if you wanted to add and barge in between then always say I would like to add a few points. If you’re not speaking, listen to others carefully. At the end of the meeting, you can exchange your cards. When somebody shared his/her card with you, always read it and if you wanted to ask something to that person so should ask or else can say thank you for your visiting card. If you’re a student in a workshop/conference or sub-ordinate in the meeting, always write down what you’ve liked about the spokesperson and discuss it with them after the meeting/conference/workshop and share your card with them. In corporate, networking is important. Networking makes you connected with the people. For building network with people, you can try LinkedIn platform.

3. Official Dinner

Sometimes official dinner happens after the meeting or for any official purposes. Generally, people come with their family in office parties/dinners too. It is okay to not talk about the hard core office work at party time. Try to talk with everyone in the party. Always be soft spoken. Don’t sit alone. It catches the eye of other people/superior if you’ve some hidden talent like playing guitar, singing or dancing. People always appreciate or request you in party time to show your hidden talent. Never say no to people if they’re in need of any help or if anybody wants to learn extra skills from you. You should know how to use your cutlery, where to put your napkin and when to use hands. Always say thank you to the waiter. Don’t throw tissue here and there. Always carry gift for the host when you’re going to somebody’s house for party or if your superior invites you. When you come back at your home always send a message to the host that thank you for hosting us, we had a very nice time and hope to see you soon. Even though you didn’t enjoy the party, but as a courtesy you should send a message.

4. Online Meeting

You should sit on comfortable chair. If you’re having official online meeting on zoom app or Google meet, always wear formal attire. While having a meeting keep your calm, if you’ve kids and they disturb you so always say please excuse me for 2 minutes. Mute yourself if somebody is in your room while having a meeting. Always have a glass of water rather than bottle. Keep a diary or pen with you when you’re joining for a meeting. Being polite, if your kids/spouse/parents enter your room without knocking the door and always mute yourself while having conversation with your family members. Everyone understands that we’re working in the covid-19 and people manages while working from home.
After the session, speaker resolved few queries of the user.

Q2. What do we do if we disagree with a colleague /boss in a meeting and they are not ready to listen to you?

You’ve to be subtle and pitching in between by saying I would like to add some points. Always be polite if you’re disagreeing and give your viewpoint with a logical reason.

Q3. Generally favoritism happens in corporate? How to handle if your seniors are biased?

If you’re victim of favoritism, your output will speak for itself. If you’re giving 100% in your work then you can show it to your senior that you’re an asset to your organization.
